The aim of the concert is to give students the chance to perform live which is a main goal for all musicians. For beginners it can be a scary step to play in front of an audience but for those who had the courage to do so the rewards were a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Songs and pieces were chosen to be within student’s skill level. So if a guitar student could only play a handful of chords that’s all they were asked to play.
These songs were performed with my partner Rachael singing which enable the whole song to be played which many beginner guitarists (and even more advanced players) never get the chance to do. It was good to get students who had never played with anyone before the chance to play with a singer through an entire song.
Bass students were also paired with guitar students of a similar level to perform songs together including Stand By Me, Wild Thing and Scar by Missy Higgins. This was an especially valuable experience for the beginner bass students to be able to play with a guitarist and a singer as it gave them a taste of playing in a band.
Here’s a list of some of the songs and pieces performed by the 18 guitar and bass students. This included a few duos where students got to play together too. |
